Discussions and knowledge exchange on data and physical interoperability for digital twins, AI and robotics.
The third in the series of National Cyber-Physical Infrastructure workshops took place at Connected Places Catapult – the home of the Digital Twin Hub – on 18 June 2024, with 60 guests spanning industry, policy and academia. The focus of the day was to discuss challenges and solutions and create a prioritised list of actions for next steps to steer national activity.
Opening the workshop were Mark Enzer, Mott MacDonald, Richard Dobson, Energy Systems Catapult, and Sarah Hayes, Connected Places Catapult. The panel comprised Paul Clarke, Lateral Leap, Sarah Cameron, Pinsent Masons, Michelle Berti, National Grid ESO and Charles Kennelly, Esri, and chaired by Justin Anderson, Connected Places Catapult.
The workshop was split into two sessions. The first looking at questions defined collectively on physical and data interoperability challenges and solutions, plus supporting guidance and skills development required to bring everything together.
The afternoon session saw delegates focused on the technical, governance and legal requirements for interoperability, specifically Minimum Interoperability Mechanisms (MIMs), alongside technical data sharing requirements, practical data governance and AI. The data sharing governance tables considered international data sharing models and legal frameworks, infrastructure models and the role of institutions. The legal table reviewed current legislation and how the newly introduced Interoperable Europe Act may provide a foundation for the UK.

Each table fed back its findings to the room – and with results captured digitally, the subsequent summary of recommendations provided the background for great discussion with the panel and questions from the floor.
