TransiT

About TransiT

Twinning for Decarbonising Transport – TransiT – is a UK research hub established in 2023 dedicated to digital twinning for transport decarbonisation. With the backing of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the hub is scoping potential digital capabilities to manage the reduction of carbon emissions from transport, which currently accounts for a third of emissions across the country. With the backing of the Engineering and Physical Science Council (EPSRC), leading experts from Heriot-Watt University and the University of Glasgow are exploring the potential of digital twins – sophisticated computer simulations of real-life physical objects, processes or systems – to manage the reduction of carbon emissions from all forms of transport. Following an initial 6-month consultation and scoping phase, the longer-term aim of the TransiT hub is to create a federated digital twin that addresses the urgent need to decarbonise transport which is still the biggest single emitter of carbon in the UK.

Research organisations that fulfil the following criteria are invited to submit an Expression of Interest

  • Experienced in the use of digital technologies for transport infrastructure and services
  • Based at an organisation eligible for UKRI funding and eligible to be named as a co-investigator on an ESPRC bid
  • Demonstrable strong track record in delivering large-scale interdisciplinary research projects
  • Capacity to leverage support from industrial stakeholder and national research assets
  • Demonstrable research impact, particularly in relation to policy advice
  • Experience of working on multi-modal transport solutions
