TransiT

About TransiT

TransiT is the UK’s national digital twinning hub for transport decarbonisation.

The research hub is a collaboration of eight universities and almost 70 industry partners, jointly led by jointly led by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, and supported by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the main funding body for engineering and physical sciences research in the UK.

TransiT is using digital twinning and related digital technologies to identify the lowest-cost, least-risky pathways to net zero emissions in UK transport across all modes – road, rail, air and maritime – for both passengers and freight.

At the heart of TransiT’s research is a set of five critical demonstrator projects involving interconnected road, rail, air and maritime systems across different regions of the UK.

These ‘Challenge-Led Demonstrators’ are supported by five interconnected research Work Packages focused on critical cross-cutting themes including cybersecurity, the economy and transport policy.

Critical to TransiT’s work is the linking together of multiple transport digital twins into an interconnected, ‘federated’ system. The aim is to build a powerful ‘whole system’ understanding of transport in the UK – including passenger and freight movements across all sectors – to rapidly test and optimise different transport decarbonisation scenarios.
