Hi @Neil, you mentioned that the glossary is a part of the commons work-steam.  Does this mean that terminological entries hosted within the Glossary will be used by the other work streams?  For example, could an entry accepted within the Glossary end up in a future CDBB report?

Yes, is the short answer. We want this to be a reference site for any author to find the correct citation for terms. So, the opportunity is not just for CDBB reports, it can proliferate through to any relevant report in the future.

there is also a Water Data Task Force and an emerging Telco Data Task Force that should be aligned

We are connected to all these groups, this also links to my response to Steve. I’d rather we have many domain specific twins run with it and flesh out the use cases. This would enable the broader usecase of connecting them more stronger and the investment required. We must remember the business case for an intra-twin is different to the inter-twin case.

    1. Use common terms within Data, Metadata and supporting information ( Energy Data Task Force)

There are currently efforts to standardise the naming conventions used across a range of infrastructure domains by the Digital Framework Task Group as part of the National Digital Twin programme of work. The long term goal is to define an ontology which enables different sectors to use a common language which in turn enables effective cross sector data sharing.

In the near term, it is unhelpful to create yet another glossary so we propose a two staged approach.

Hey Steven, good to hear from you! This is a good point from the EDTF, the section under your quote says:

    1. Organisations label data with keywords and the authoritative source of their definition e.g. Term [Glossary Reference]

This is exactly what our Glossary is doing, hence the shared status and the related meta data. This is not about creating a new ‘master’ glossary, our aim is to help the convergence of language in this space. They set out the problem statement well, there are many existing glossaries and there is a need to connect them!

On the DAFNI front, we are working in collaboration with them. Also, there can never be a single initiative. We need that competitive edge to drive innovation! I’ll soon be releasing an article on the hub about the history of the internet. There were a number of competing internet protocols HTML and FTP for example.

My urge is for members to contribute in linking these through the platform.

Many thanks for the talk, Neil,

is their likely to be a link between the new terms and the appropriate technical standards related to and defining the term and orientating the applications?

Hey @Charles – You highlight something important about the Commons and what I’ve called our design principles. We have two modes of development, first is the creation of seeds. Where the seeds will either inform the development of existing standards or form the basis of new national/international standards. The second is establishing links to existing standards and supporting the extensibility of particular standards.

Built is generally the verb. Building a scope around the built environment is tough as it sits on top of the natural environment etc. Do you have an idea on other frames we could explore?

Hi Neil, thank you for your talk . Is the long term view to create a common data dictionary for digital twin infrastructure/assets?

Absolutley! This is the start of that, as I said this this the human side. There will also be a technology aspect of the data structure aspect. It is on our roadmap.

Hi how do you propose to link with the many existing catalogues/vocabularies/dictionaries that already exist?

@holgerkessler – this is a great question! We will use the meta data of the shared status of a term to learn the connectivity to existing standards. We will aslo learn if there are any overlaps too!

Hi @Neil, are there particular areas/domains/topics where you would like members to add to the Glossary (areas where you and the Commons team are specifically looking for input)?

@DRossiter87 We would like to see how BIM and DTs interface, we would also like contribution on roles…. also even something as simple as the view of what a Digital Twin is will be interested to see evolve.

Thank you Neil, Do we have examples from other fields where a glossary approach like this has worked?

Hey @Miranda, good question! Yes, if we look at things like Github and Stackoverflow in the software world we can see how effective it is to connect technical people in this way. interestingly it creates a vital learning environment!

Welcome to the start of today’s Digital Twin Talk on #Twinfrastructure and a big thank you to @Neil from SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins and CDBB for joining us. We’re looking forward to your thoughts and questions related to Neil’s video – and maybe posing one or two of our own.

Please do start adding your thoughts by replying to the conversation thread.

Thank you @DRossiter87 Looking forward to the debate!

    • Who are you? I’m a technologist and economist with experience in implementing technology at most stages of a built asset lifecycle. I also have experience in commercial strategy and construction economics.
    • What is your industry and profession? Technology, engineering (member of the IET) in the built environment and chartered construction manager.  I also straddle practice with research via an Associate Professor role at University College London.
    • Where do you plan to use your new Digital Twin Knowledge? Personally/professionally? Both, I cofounded the Digital Twin Fan Club community for fun, and lucky enough to contribute to the NDTP.  I’m also VC of the TechUK Digital Twin Working Group and I am keen to connect our community.
    • Why have you decided to join the DTHub? I want to connect with fellow practitioners, learn from trail blazers and make change happen!
    • Have you participated in any of our meetups, or events? Yes.
    • Do you have any examples of work that you have done using Digital Twins? I’ve been working with a group of people via SafetiBase on creating a data trust for sharing risk data, I think its a great example of what twins could achieve… making the built environment a safe place to work!
