DIATOMIC
About DIATOMIC
DIATOMIC (Digital InnovAtion TransfOrMatIve Change) is a pioneering initiative driving Birmingham’s ambition to become a global leader in digital twin technology and smart city innovation. Launched in 2023 and funded by Innovate UK, DIATOMIC is led by Connected Places Catapult in partnership with Aston University, Birmingham City University, University of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council, and the Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.
At its core, DIATOMIC develops open, modular digital twin platforms that create real-time virtual models of Birmingham’s infrastructure and services. These digital twins enable city planners, businesses, and citizens to make smarter, data-driven decisions-optimizing transport, improving air quality, enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting the transition to net zero. The project’s architecture is designed for interoperability and scalability, using open standards and APIs to allow diverse partners to contribute and integrate new solutions.
DIATOMIC’s accelerator program supports local SMEs in developing digital innovations that address real-world challenges, fostering economic growth and inclusive opportunities across the West Midlands. Key use cases include traffic and air quality management, energy systems optimization, and hydrogen fuel cell lifecycle management. By championing open collaboration, international partnerships, and inclusive innovation, DIATOMIC is setting the standard for federated digital twin ecosystems-empowering Birmingham to build a more connected, sustainable, and prosperous future for all.
