Philip Greening of TransiT presents ‘TransiT Phase 2 – Stakeholder update and collaboration’ for the Feature Focus on the DT Hub’s weekly Gemini Call.
Philip discusses the TRANSIT project, a 5-year £20 million research initiative funded by EPSRC aimed at decarbonizing the transport sector. In this presentation he highlights the significant financial consequences and time constraints involved, with around £170 billion currently spent globally on transport decarbonization.
Key challenges identified include uncertainty and risk deterring investment, lack of access to data for modeling future scenarios, and addressing human behaviour. The vision is to develop a federated system of digital twins that can optimize the entire complex transport system across modes like aviation, rail, maritime, and road.
This represents a shift from closed-loop asset optimization to an open system view. Engaging stakeholders like local authorities and the Department for Transport is crucial. The goals are to design the future decarbonized transport system, minimize transition costs, and ultimately optimize operations for enhanced user experience and freight movement efficiency once new technologies and infrastructure are deployed.
