Industry: Defence
No sure how much of a Roadblock this is in the commercial world but it is definitely a Roadblock within a defence operational environment.
Assets that are provided to the MOD do not always have the capability to transfer data in real time; the lack of logistic communication has always been an issue when dealing with the A2 Echelons (Frontline) and further back down the Forward and Reverse Supply Chain, until good communication is established.
As part of the Design & Manufacturing Phase of a project, these requirements are often traded out because of cost and the known lack of ability to transfer this data. So even when operating where communications are good, there is no ability on the asset to automatically connect and transfer the data to the Digital.
HUMS data is a prime example of this information transfer Roadblock. The platforms do have the ability to capture this data but getting it off the platform and dealing with the different Security Classifications and aggregation of the data is another problem.
A lot of work has already been completed as part of the Logistic Coherence Information Architecture (LCIA) (Subject to Change) with regard to the data and what is required where.
Just a bit on the CADMID life cycle for Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) attached.
Hope this hits the mark and is an interesting discussion point 🙂
Regards
Rich

Our discussion with Adam and @Ian Gordon was a powerful and interesting one.
Adam is deeply cynical and rightfully so that applying new technologies within existing governance structures without changing them. Ian is passionate about providing benefit across society. Me? Well I’m interested in how people think. Although Adam was cynical and perhaps even jaded, I felt that there was a vital passion to him, a burning desire to find the right solution that could perhaps one day lead to no place, to Utopia, or maybe that was Ian.
Tell us what you think and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Hi HenryFT,
Good discussion and funny
I love the idea and how much good it should bring to the whole society, I don’t think we should force a social reform if done correctly it should happen…start with the end in mind….someone told me that years ago…Star Trek Utopian Society, (I’am not a Trekky) that’s where I want to be. I do have concerns though…not insurmountable I hasten to add.
Current social media/networks..not that much of a fan, I was when they started….really liked the idea but it’s changed a lot, not sure its for the best yet. But regardless a wealth of data about individuals. What they like and dislike, funny how we don’t have a dislike on popular social platforms…at least I don’t think we do. (Thinking emoji) but goes much deeper, as a natural thing we do with data is categorise things. The fruits of our labour, bananas, green banana, yellow banana etc we do it all the time without thinking i guess.
Personal data privacy, safety and right to be forgotten…at least to a point. The government know most things about us and that data needs to be protected against nefarious use…sorry too dramatic. Maybe some sort of Government Digital Twin Data Charter…..googling….like this The HMRC Charter – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and Personal information charter – HM Revenue & Customs – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
I think it’s important to have these discussions, like it or not society has its fair share of opinions some undesirable to others, but everyone still has a voice and data, which needs representing. Don’t discount he bad data, but use it to understand whats wrong. The old adage is you can’t please everyone.
IBM’s Watson for Oncology cognitive computing system, maybe not delivering what was promised. How much can you trust the medias reporting at the moment…maybe controversial.
Too much?

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply and the welcome
I wouldn’t call them leads really, mostly resources for Defence and Industry.
Assuming you are a member of Team Defence Information and attend one of the 7 Digital Twin work strands, as listed on the front? I recently attended the Supply Chain And Support Optimisation one, which is what I do as my day job.
The problem is multi faceted. When you say the customer (MOD) doesn’t recognise it? what’s it? Good practice from suppliers?
A lot of the industry members of team defence have digital twins in development if not already in operation. I believe the strands are to support the customer in realising, digital twin development of functional areas within MOD would help provide better outcomes for their business.
I think a lot of other sectors are using and benefiting from use of digital twins, I think that goes without saying, hence why we are here. There are some constraints, but not insurmountable, but they are there none the less.
I hope it isn’t wasted, its an interesting sector and one I enjoy working in. They are the best people I have had the privilege to work with in my career.

Hi Dave,
Recently joined.
I’m part of a Team Defence Information’s Digital Twins working group, primarily Data Capture and Mapping.
I can possible answer one or two questions….answer maybe too strong a word.
Meta Data
I believe they use Dublin Core or at least reference to it. It’s a bit sketchy.
Is it used for meta data descriptions of DT’s? I don’t know, I’m assuming that it could be.
Federated DTs
We have spoken about interaction between DT’s. Maybe Hierarchical.
Scenario Generation:
Reverse and Forward Supply Chain. Maybe. We have as in General Dynamics, modelled our Delivery Teams Supply Chain for the equipment we deliver and manage.
The individual Delivery Teams contract Industry to model availability amongst other stuff….it’s part of Def Stan 00-600: ILS requirements for MOD projects. Part of contract award.
Sharing Environments:
Interesting.
Reference DTs of buildings
The Knowledge in Defence (KiD) through the Defence Gateway is a good resource. One area covers MOD establishments but nothing external, at least a do not think so.
It is also, where you can get access to the relevant Def Stan’s and the Defence Logistic Framework (DLF). I believe you need Delivery Team sponsorship for access.
IPR Issues:
Different depending on contract type. IPR is usually agreed as part of contact award.
Version Control:
Is there any guidance about maintaining records of changes to DTs?
Physical definitely, Digitally, I believe so, it’s at least being thought about. We have talked about “What If” scenarios using the digital.
We have some good knowledge in the work group, I hope that they will join up. Happy to chat in some more generic detail.
Still no thinking emoji
The Team Defence Information website is a good start. Welcome to Team Defence Information – TD-Info

Hi Everyone,
How rude of me to post and not introduce myself
Who are you?
Chartered Engineering working for General Dynamics UK, with experience of general data “collaborativeness”, is that a word? I work with information systems and services, including their design and development, implementation, delivery and management.
What is your industry and profession?
Defence sector, Information and Knowledge Management Lead. I have worked in the sector for 17 years; I have an IT background, but primarily work on Logistics and Support systems and services for our Delivery Teams.
Where do you plan to use your new Digital Twin Knowledge?
Digital Twining the USS Enterprise (thinking emoji) working in support of the programmes we have. I would like to look at Digital Twinning the MOD supply chain…..to big?
Why have you decided to join the DTHub?
I met, although very briefly Alexandra Robasto (thinking emoji) on a Team Defence Information call, we were talking about Data Capture and Mapping.
Have you participated in any of our meetups, or events?
Through Team Defence. Not heard much about DTs, neither have many of my IT colleagues and they are in vastly different sectors than me. John Ahmet Erkoyuncu chaired the call but really enjoyed the concept and real world implementations of the capability. We answered a few questions which I hope will cause conversation on the forum (Thinking emoji) although I cannot recall them.
Do you have any examples of work that you have done using Digital Twins?
None

Thanks @Peter
There was a comment on the Gemini Call today: “digital twins will never be a complete ‘mimic’ of the real world but will constantly evolve but will always be behind.”Are there any comments to continue the discussion…
Hi Everyone,
I can’t believe you don’t have the thinking face emoji
Can I caveat that? In terms of data.
In terms of intervention, it should be upfront. Is intervention a good word? Can we not use the digital twin to make the physical better?
On Intervention:
· Types of use cases
· Levels of control
· Types of intervention tools
It’s like Star Trek, when Scottie manages to get the Enterprise to perform just that bit better than the specification. Digital Twin of the Enterprise anyone?…..”Computer?”

Blockchain is interesting, I do some crypto trading/mining and its an interesting response by the government on the technology/crypto exchanges, specifically the one in the news at the moment.
Summary: It’s all about the different capability of the various blockchain’s and their application…..TikTok is a great source of knowledge once the algorithm pickups what you’re interested in blockchain/crypto/application/technology/lamborghini’s
Altcoins/applications XRP, HNT, VET, HBAR, ADA…there are many more…BTC and ETH obviously. There is a lot of chat about the future of the technology and but I think it’s here to stay. People were saying “Internet 2.0”
Happy to chat more on the subject.
