Not sure if this is what you refer to from your time in a signal box but If I remember correctly Network Rail used schematic 1D maps that were created back in the 80’s they were known as Quail Maps published by Trackmaps.

Not sure they will be easier than georeferenced maps to create and maintain, and the advantage of being able to exchange information between organizations will be lost.
