Digital Twin Overview

Anglian Water is responsible for maintaining and improving the water and water recycling network in the East of England, delivering high-quality drinking water to its customers and recycling the resulting wastewater.

Opportunities & Challenges

A key part of Anglian’s 25 year Water Resources Management Plan is the Strategic Pipeline Alliance programme (SPA), a collaboration between Anglian Water, Costain, Farrans, Jacobs, and Mott MacDonald. We are using SPA to develop our Digital Twin by defining the data requirements within our Asset Information Model using the BIM framework (ISO 19650).  Part of this work is to develop the concept of Process Blocks and the functional, geospatial, measurement, and analytical information needed to manage our assets more efficiently and effectively.

(1 ) Improving existing asset structures and classifications
(2) Identifying data ownership and stewardship, along with privacy standards.
(3) Creation of data quality metrics, enabling effective decision making throughout lifecycles.
(4) Establishing an enterprise-wide Master Data Management strategy.
(5) Ensuring our digital twin can be integrated with other water companies, as well wider utility twins.

(1) Collective development of an industry standard as part of the BIM4Water groups
(2) Exploitation and expansion of the Uniclass 2015, ensuring there is consistency for federated Digital Twins
(3) Standardised Water Industry ‘Process Blocks’ can enable multiple efficiencies throughout an asset’s lifecycle; from initial optioneering, fabrication/procurement, and installation, to their commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.
